Positions and Appointments

Visiting Assistant Professor

•    Non-renewable, two-year appointment.
•    Eligible for promotion to an Assistant Professor position in the second year, based on performance.
•    Standard teaching load: two courses per semester.

Assistant Professor

•    Entry-level, academic promotion-track faculty position.
•    Initial appointment is typically for eight years.
•    Promotion to Associate Professor is expected within seven years.
•    Applications for promotion may be submitted at any time.
•    Usual course load is two courses per semester but in most cases a course reduction is granted to start-up faculty to establish their research agenda.

Associate Professor & Professor

•    Candidates for Associate Professor must complete the Qualification through the Higher Education Council of Türkiye and the affiliated Inter-University Board before applying. Otherwise they may be employed on a visiting associate professor rank until the necessary process is finalized.
•    The same applies to Professor appointments.

*** Here is an explanation about the terms we use to describe the above positions. "promotion-track" is roughly the Turkish version of "tenure-track". The jobs at the level of associate professor or professor are "non-fixed-term appointments" which roughly covers the "tenure appointment" concept.

Wages, Compensation & Benefits

•    Salary: Bilkent offers a competitive salary which is quoted and paid monthly as net salaries (after taxes and deductions). Salaries are adjusted biannually (January and July) to reflect inflation. Offered salaries are compatible with the candidate's background, expertise and experience.

•    Performance-Based Merit Pay: Additional salary component based on academic achievements and teaching performance, reviewed annually.

•    Research Support: Start-up research funds are provided to assist new faculty. Additional travel support is available for presenting research each year.
 
•    Lunch Vouchers: In addition to these University provides each faculty with monthly lunch vouchers which can be used at all food facilities on campus as well as at most eateries outside campus..
 
•    Course reduction: The usual course load is two courses per semester but young faculty is generally granted a course reduction, one course per semester, for the first year or two, depending on the research agenda of the young faculty.

•    Healthcare & Social Security:

o    Enrollment in the Turkish National Social Security System, with full premium coverage by the university.
o    Optional participation in the Bilkent Group Health Plan, subsidized by the university.

•    Housing: Fully furnished on-campus lodging is provided where you pay only for the utilities such as electric, water, heating and maintenance.

•   Smoke free campus: With the aim of creating a healthy and civilized university environment for all Bilkenters, Bilkent University initiated a Smoke-Free Campus policy with the decisions of the Senate and the University Executive Board. Accordingly,  the use of cigarettes and other tobacco products and electronic cigarettes are prohibited in all indoor and outdoor areas of Bilkent University.
